Two Battles of the Bulge

by | Dec 18, 2019

Bear with me in these short almost-winter days as I blog about two bulging battles, one personal and tactical.  The other most strategically.

Our left-hand image below offers what most KaBoomers recognize as Joe Six-Pack, our reverse role model for lean and healthy living. His apple shaped profile with excess central fat is most unhealthy.  Theses Holidays, Joe may pack another 1-2 pounds of white fat onto that central avoirdupois. Oy!

Yet, let’s historically reflect on the right-hand image of GIs fighting against all odds.

Seventy-five years ago this month, the largest land battle of World War II began in Europe’s Ardennes Forest.  Hitler’s bold and aggressive thrust almost broke our extended ground forces when our air superiority couldn’t fly.  You may remember the mojo “NUTS” response of  General Anthony McAuliffe (101st Airborne)  when asked by the raiding Germans if he intended to surrender Bastogne.  Where did we get such men?

We don’t have many of those Bastogne studs still living among us – most regrettably.

Slaughterhouse-Five author Kurt Vonnegut and NY Yankee Baseball legend Ralph Houk counted themselves among the lucky Ardennes survivors. Perhaps a relative of yours was with these two as survivors – hopefully so. Or perhaps not, as was the case for many American families by 1945. God rest their service souls!

Back to Mr. 6 Pack.

We will be paying more Medicare funds for the likes of him that we might if he took exercise and proactive eating habits seriously.  Metabolic Syndrome is deadly (See this Mayo Clinic explanation ). I’m deadly serious! Joe’s risks for heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes are too high – as are one third (!!) of all boomers. His conditions likely include: increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around his waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

It’s never too late for Joe to get serious about moving to sweat, balancing his daily energy equation with portion control, de-stressing about life and gaining his restorative sleep. He CAN change his prospects  Change that waist to hip ratio Joe – and reverse your reverse role model profile – please!

Be well and eat wisely in this Christmas season.  Just like Girl on the Move advises:
